The Division of Human Development offers a variety of programs that focus on the economic and human needs of the disadvantaged residents of the community. Staff members are available to assist individuals prepare preliminary budgets to help determine eligibility for food stamps and to advocate for individuals at D.S.S. fair hearings. Staff will also assist individuals in securing services from other governmental agencies for emergency housing, Section 8 housing, social security income, social security disability and unemployment benefits.

Teen Parent Resource Center

The Teen Parent Resource Center is designed to provide supportive services and leisure activities for parents who are 13 to 21 years of age. The objective of the program is to ease the transition into responsible parenthood. Both mothers and fathers are encouraged to participate.
Cancer Support Groups
The Brentwood/Bay Shore Breast Cancer Coalition provides vital information through its referral services for people seeking to learn more about cancer, as well as, support for cancer patients and their families. One group meets on the first Thursday of the month. Individuals are encouraged to participate on the community board which drives this program. Participants can become involved in program planning or just attend and listen. There is a Latina Breast Cancer Support Group which meets on the last Thursday of the month, accommodating Spanish-speaking participants. Program registration is required for both groups. The Division of Services to the Disabled provides special vehicle identification cards (Disabled Parking Permits) for disabled residents of Islip. We also provide referral and advocacy services, therapeutic recreation programs, as well as a van transportation program.

The Town’s Senior Citizen Centers serve as a focal point for social, cultural and educational programs for residents 60 years of age and older. The Division of Drug and Alcohol Services provides counseling, education and intervention services to Town of Islip residents and their families. In addition to individual, group and family counseling, specialized services are available for adolescents, women, children, adult children of alcoholics, parents of substance abusers, co-dependents, domestic violence batterers, and people living with HIV. Psychiatric services are offered on site. Insurance and Medicaid are accepted for some services. A sliding fee scale is available for all others. All services are strictly confidential!
